How Maternity & Newborn Photography Becomes a Gift for Your Future Child

Welcoming a new little person into the world is more than a moment, it’s an entire chapter filled with change, anticipation, and the kind of joy that often catches parents off guard. When you choose to invite Studio Cath to capture your maternity and newborn photo session you’re not just booking pictures; you’re creating heirlooms that your future child will look back on and treasure.

Pregnancy moves forward with surprising speed. What feels like a slow change at first often becomes a blur of weeks and months. Capturing your bump helps freeze one of life’s rare in-between chapters: you’re still in two, yet about to become three (or more).

Photos allow your future child to meet the story of their arrival, not just the day they entered the world, but the days before, when they were nestled inside and the family was already forming.

Maternity and Newborn Photos

Couples often choose to capture their story of expecting a baby from the announcement till the moment the baby is born.

All these photos go beyond simple images; they tell a story of love, anticipation, and joy. Professionally captured pregnancy announcement photos allow parents-to-be to share their exciting news in a beautiful and personal way, creating lasting memories that can be cherished for years to come. They also mark the beginning of a new chapter, celebrating the journey of parenthood before it even begins, and providing heartfelt keepsakes to look back on with family and friends.

Once the baby bump is beautifully visible, it is time for Maternity photos.
A maternity photo session is usually scheduled between 25 and 35 weeks when your belly has popped and you’re still feel good to move.

As a Chicago-based maternity photographer, I bring a calm, directed approach so you can stay relaxed, focus on your connection with your partner or bump, and simply enjoy the moment.

Two to four weeks after your baby is born we’ll schedule your newborn photo session.
As a photographer at Studio Cath I come over to your home to capture these precious first moments with your newborn baby in the comfort of your own home.

A newborn photo session at home is a lifestyle photo session. We’ll capture your life as a new family with your newborn baby, siblings and pets if there are any as well.

When your baby grows, your child might ask: “What was I like before I came?” or “Were you excited?” The images you create now answer those questions. They show the love, the expectation, the warmth of your home waiting for their arrival.

Parents often forget how many minor details change after that first year—with siblings, routines, and growth. However, the photographs from an in-home session show the stillness of that space, the subtle glow of anticipation, and the way the family was gathering in one room for something so gentle and enormous at the same time.

By framing your partner’s hand on your belly, a small silken dress swirling while you move: these become stories you’ll tell your child when they’re older. And when they lean in and say “Tell me about this photo,” you’ll have a moment to relate how you felt, how the light caught the curve of your bump, and how ready you were to meet them.

In that way, you’re giving more than a photo, you’re giving a legacy.

  • Wear something you feel confident in—flowing fabrics, soft textures, something that doesn’t distract but still feels like you.
  • Bring meaningful items: maybe a small pair of baby booties, the blanket you’ll use, a sonogram image.
  • Let your space reflect your life. Choose a spot by a large window with gentle light, perhaps your bed, couch, or even a reading nook. Good light and a comfortable pose go a long way.
  • Include anyone you’d like—your partner, your older children, your pet. These images become dynamic, showing how your family was moments before expansion began.
  • Focus on interaction—not just standing and smiling. A hand on the bump, a whisper, a quiet glance: these gestures carry emotion.
  • Pick a time when you feel good—most often between weeks 28-34 when your belly is nicely shaped but you’re still comfortable.

Planning your maternity photo session in Chicago session during the 25-35 weeks window ensures you can capture the radiant glow and excitement of this special stage before the final weeks of preparation begin.

It’s a great idea to book your newborn photo session at the same time, as babies are best photographed within the first two to four weeks after birth, when they’re still sleepy and naturally curled up. At Studio Cath I always factor in that the date for your newborn photo session, booked in advance, might be tentative. When things go differently than planned we reschedule the newborn photo session. It’s most important that we pick a date and timing that is most comfortable for you.

Securing both sessions in advance not only guarantees availability but also provides a seamless experience, allowing your photographer to capture the full story of your journey from bump to baby with a consistent style and emotional connection.

If you’re expecting and thinking about documenting this moment, thinking about how your future child might one day ask, “What was I like?”—Studio Cath is ready to step in.

Let’s make memories that matter.
