Tips for a Stress-Free Newborn Photo Session

As a pro photographer who focuses on newborn photography, I’ve discovered that taking pictures of a baby’s first moments can bring joy and challenges. At Studio Cath in Chicago, we know how important it is to create a peaceful and cozy setting for the baby and parents. Here are some key tips to help you have a relaxed newborn photo session that produces beautiful lasting images.

Plan Ahead

Good planning is crucial for a successful newborn photography session. Try to book the session within the first two weeks after the baby’s birth. During this time, newborns tend to sleep more and have more flexibility, which makes it easier to pose them and capture those cute curled-up positions.

Make a Comfy Space

Newborns react to their surroundings, so creating a pleasant environment is key to a relaxed session.

Feed and Calm Your Baby Before the Session

A happy baby makes for a smooth photo shoot. Making sure your baby has a full tummy and feels cozy before you start can help.

Get Props and Outfits Ready Ahead of Time

To cut down on breaks during the shoot, set everything up first.

Stay Calm and Go with the Flow

Newborn photography calls for patience and adaptability. Each baby has its own personality, and plans can sometimes go awry.

Include Siblings and Pets with Care

If you want your older kids or pets to be in the photos too, think it through to make sure everyone has a good time. It’s the easiest to capture beautiful photos with your newborn baby and siblings or pets when the baby is asleep. When he baby is fast asleep we can get the sibling(s) and/or pets ready first and hand over the baby when everything is calm and safe.

Rely on Your Photographer

As a skilled newborn photographer, I am relexed and patient in every newborn photo session at home. When you trust your photographer’s know-how, you’ll feel less stressed during the session. I always schedule a zoom call before I come over to your home. During this call we’ll get to know each other a bit better. And I tell about my way of working so you know what to expect ahead of time. From your side the zoom call is the perfect moment to ask any questions you might have, talk about your ideas and express your worries. (if there are any!) This way we’ll have a clear path to start our wonderful photo session at your house!

Welcome the Flaws

Some of the loveliest and most real newborn photos catch genuine moments – like yawns, stretches, or even tiny frowns.

When It’s Over

After the photo shoot ends, take a breather and think back on what happened.

If you follow these tips, you’ll have a relaxed newborn photo session that captures your baby’s beauty and innocence. At Studio Cath, we aim to create a peaceful fun experience that produces beautiful pictures you’ll love for years to come. Keep in mind, these early days go by so fast – putting money into professional newborn photography lets you pause these moments making memories that will stick around forever.
