Capturing the Bond: Newborn Pictures with Mom and Dad

As a pro photographer in Chicago, I’ve had the chance to snap countless special moments between parents and their newborns. Baby pictures are more than just photos; they’re lasting keepsakes that show the pure love and connection in a family. In this article, I’ll share my know-how on how to make beautiful newborn photos that show off the unique bond between baby, mom, and dad.

Taking photos of newborns is a special kind of art. It needs you to be patient, know what you’re doing, and get babies and their parents. The aim? To catch those raw feelings and soft moments that just happen between families. But you’ve got to make sure everyone’s comfy and safe too.

Want the best newborn baby shots? Try to snap them in the first two to four weeks after birth. Babies are still sleepy then, and you can move them into poses. But remember, babies don’t always show up when they’re supposed to. So, be ready to change your plans!

For newborn baby pictures where you take them matters a lot. For an at home photo session we usually use two to three rooms: the livingroom, the nursery and the primary bedroom. As a photographer I would always recommend to use the rooms where the most natural light comes in. To make every room ready for a newborn photo session, make sure they are decluttered and clean! Other then to get the rooms estetically ready for a photo shoot, it’s important to make your baby feel comfortable.
Keep the room warm (about 75-80°F), and get a mix of blankets or wraps ready (preferably in natural colors) You might want to play gentle lullabies in the background to make your little baby feel totally at ease.

Photographing the little things make your newborn special:

  • Itty-bitty fingers and toes
  • Soft wisps of hair
  • Sleepy smiles after feeding
  • How they snuggle in your arms

These close-ups will become treasured keepsakes.

  2. Baby lies on mom’s shoulder
  3. Mom kisses baby’s forehead
  4. Mom and baby’s hands link together

We can’t leave out dad! Some of the sweetest suggestions for dad and the newborn include:

  1. Baby sleeps on dad’s chest
  2. Dad cradles baby in his hands
  3. Dad kisses baby’s cheek
  4. Baby grasps dad’s finger

Natural light flooding into the room is my favorite light source by far. We can play with light and shadow by using window treatment. The use of natural light results in the most natural looking pictures. But I know a lot of Chicago homes don’t have anbundant natural light coming in, that’s why I always bring extra studio lights with me.

So called unscripted photos, or candid photos, reflect real emotions and the genuine bond with your newborn baby in the best possible way. But even ‘unscripted’ photos usually need a little direction. The prompts below really work to evoke natural intercation between the parent(s) and the baby. Genuine and intimate photos guarenteed!

  • Whisper soft words to your baby
  • Sing a quiet song
  • Just smell that new baby scent
  • kiss the baby’s tiny fingers or toes
