Keeping the right temperature is key to a good newborn photo shoot. Especially in winter season it’s important to keep the rooms we’ll use comfy and warm. Baby’s bare skin is so preciously beautiful, that is it worth it to take pictures with your baby not fully dressed. Therefore: keep it warm inside!

Lighting: Soft and Soothing

Natural light is an absolute to go for light source for every newborn at home photo session. Sunlight from big windows does the trick, but have backup plans for cloudy days or rooms without these desired big windows.

I always bring a studio light with umbrella to create a mild steady light that doesn’t hurt the baby’s delicate eyes.

Sound Management: How White Noise Helps

A silent room might seem perfect, but total quiet can make a newborn more reactive to abrupt sounds. Instead, add white noise or soft calming sounds to your newborn photo shoot. This background noise can help cover any unexpected noises and keep the baby relaxed.

Make sure the rooms we’re going to use are cleaned up the day before and outfits are layed out a few days in advance. This way you can go over it and see if something is missing or whether you want to make changes.

I did many newborn photo sessions and it never happend that a baby didn’t cry at all. In other words: don’t feel stressed when your little one starts crying, it’s super normal! Maybe an extra feeding helps, a diaper change or just sitting 10 minutes together in the rocking chair to comfort your baby. We’ll take a break as long as needed and continue our photo session once veryone is calm and relaxed again!

Want the best newborn baby shots? Try to snap them in the first two to four weeks after birth. Babies are still sleepy then, and you can move them into poses. But remember, babies don’t always show up when they’re supposed to. So, be ready to change your plans!

Making Every room ready and comfortable

For newborn baby pictures where you take them matters a lot. For an at home photo session we usually use two to three rooms: the livingroom, the nursery and the primary bedroom. As a photographer I would always recommend to use the rooms where the most natural light comes in. To make every room ready for a newborn photo session, make sure they are decluttered and clean! Other then to get the rooms estetically ready for a photo shoot, it’s important to make your baby feel comfortable.
Keep the room warm (about 75-80°F), and get a mix of blankets or wraps ready (preferably in natural colors) You might want to play gentle lullabies in the background to make your little baby feel totally at ease.
