Behind the Scenes of a Day in the Life of a Chicago Family Photographer

As the sun begins to rise over the Chicago skyline, as a family photographer, my day starts early. At Studio Cath, my morning is a crucial time for preparation and organization. The first task is to review the day’s schedule and ensure all necessary equipment is ready. Cameras, lenses, batteries, and memory cards are checked and double-checked to avoid any hiccups during the shoot.

Other things I bring to a family photo session? A bottle of water, my polaroid camera for a snapshot, a snack when I have multiple photo sessions that day and my phone.

A quick glance at the weather forecast is essential. Chicago’s weather can be unpredictable. I always check the weather a week before the photo session, and then again 2 to 3 days before. Most times all photo sessions can take plpace at the sheduled day and time. Only sometimes we’ll have to reschedule due to unfortunate weather circumstances.

A day or two before the photo session takes place, a brief communication with the clients is essential. Confirming the time and place, answering any last-minute questions, and providing reassurance sets the tone for a smooth photoshoot. A family photo session is an exciting event, so I believe in making everyone feel comfortable already before the photo session starts.

Traveling to the shoot location is another significant part of the day. Chicago is a bustling city with diverse neighborhoods, each offering unique backdrops for family photos. Whether it’s the serene settings of Lincoln Park, the iconic skyline views from North Avenue Beach, or the vibrant murals in Pilsen, every location has its own charm.

I make sure to check traffic conditions before I leave and I am always at least 15 minutes early at the location. During that time I prepare for the family photo session. Checking the lighting conditions on the spot. Check out whether every part of the location we choose is still accessable and see if there’s any other event going on (like a wedding session) that might require some changes in plans for our photo session.

Arriving at the location, the real magic begins. I am always excited to finally meet the family! We’ll be first spending a few moments chatting, which helps everyone relax and it creates a friendly atmosphere. Building a connection with the family, especially the kids, is crucial for capturing authentic and joyful moments.

A family photoshoot is dynamic and demands flexibility. Kids are unpredictable, and their moods can change rapidly. As a Chicago family photographer, I am used to be patient and I am always ready to adapt. Engaging the children with games, encouraging them to play, and capturing candid moments often yield the best photographs. As a former primary school teacher, I love to engange with children and I have quite a few tricks in my backpack to make sure they cooperate and have a good time.

Lighting is paramount in photography, and natural light is a favorite tool. Positioning the family to take advantage of the best light at that moment is big part of my job as a photographer. At the same time finding shaded areas to avoid harsh shadows is also part of the process. Each click of the shutter captures a moment in time, preserving the family’s unique story.

Once the shoot wraps up, the work is far from over. Back at Studio Cath, the first step is to transfer the photos from the memory cards to a secure storage system. This ensures that the precious moments captured are safely backed up.

The editing process is where the raw images are transformed into polished, beautiful photographs. Using software like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, I make adjustments to exposure and color balance. When the photo is edited to my satisfaction I choose the right cropping to finish the edit. Each image is carefully reviewed, and imperfections are subtly retouched to enhance the overall aesthetics while maintaining the natural look of the photos.

Creating a cohesive set of images that tell your family’s story is my main goal. I will choose not only ‘posed’ photos but candid ones as well. The unscripted moments show the uniqueness of the moment and your family. I love creating a mix of black and white photos and beautiful colored ones. The final photo gallery I deliver reflects the personality of your family and emotions captured during the shoot.

The final step in the process is delivering the edited photos to the clients. At Studio Cath, I believe in providing a seamless and enjoyable experience from start to finish. An online gallery allows families to easily view and download their photos, and I also offer options for high-quality prints and albums.

Follow-up communication is key to ensuring client satisfaction. Checking in to see if they are happy with the photos, addressing any additional requests, and expressing gratitude for their trust and collaboration helps build lasting relationships. I am truly gratefull for every family who chooses me as their family photographer, therefor I will do everything in my power to make sure that the photos you get are exactly what you wished for. And more!

At the end of the day, reflection is an important part of the process. Reviewing the day’s work, identifying areas for improvement, and celebrating successes help in continuously honing the craft. Photography is a blend of art and technical skill, and there’s always something new to learn or experiment with.

Planning for future shoots involves staying inspired and creative. Researching new locations, keeping up with photography trends, and investing in new equipment or props are all part of staying ahead in the competitive field of family photography in Chicago.

In conclusion, a day in the life of a Chicago family photographer at Studio Cath is filled with preparation, creativity, and connection. From early morning preparations to the final delivery of beautiful family portraits, every step is dedicated to capturing and preserving the precious moments that families will cherish for a lifetime.
