Chicago offers a lot of opportunities for capturing beautiful engagement photos.
As a Chicago engagement photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of photographing couples in some of the city’s most iconic and intimate locations. Here are my top tips for making the most of your engagement photo session in the Windy City.

Embrace the Iconic Landmarks
Chicago is renowned for its architectural marvels and picturesque spots. Which provide a perfect backdrop for engagement photos. Some must-visit locations I love for engagment or couples photo sessions:
- Millennium Park: The iconic Cloud Gate (often called “The Bean”) is a favorite among couples. Its reflective surface creates interesting and unique photos, especially during sunrise or sunset.
- The Chicago Riverwalk: This scenic path along the Chicago River offers stunning views of the city’s architecture and is perfect for a romantic stroll.
- Lincoln Park: From the lush greenery to the stunning views of the city skyline, Lincoln Park provides a versatile setting for engagement photos.
- Milton Lee Olive Park offers an amazing skyline view and Ohio Street Beach right there as well. A romantic location for a nice variation of engagement or couples photos.

Timing is Everything
The time of day can significantly impact the quality of your photos. If you are flexible on your time for booking your engagement photo session, consider these tips for the best timing:
- Golden Hour: The period shortly before sunset, known as the golden hour, offers the best natural lighting. The soft, warm light during these times creates a romantic and flattering glow. Schedule your photo session 1.5 hour before sunset to make sure you’ll catch the best part of the golden hour.
- Nighttime: For a dramatic and unique look, consider scheduling part of your session after sunset. The city lights and illuminated buildings can add a magical touch to your photos.
- Avoiding crowds, go early: Popular locations can get crowded, especially on weekends and during peak tourist seasons. Early mornings or weekdays are generally less crowded, providing a more intimate setting for your photos.

Dress to Impress
Your outfit makes or breaks your engagement photos! What you wear influences the overall look and feel of the images. I offer a style guide with tips and tricks for the best outfits for your engagement or couples photo session. A few tips on choosing the right outfits that always work:
- Coordinate, Don’t Match: Select outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Focus on coordinating colors and styles that reflect your personalities and the vibe you want to convey.
- Comfort is Key: Choose outfits that you feel comfortable and confident in. If you’re uncomfortable, it will show in the photos.
- Layers and Accessories: Adding layers and accessories can bring depth and interest to your photos. Think scarves, hats, and jackets for a chic or hip look.
- Consider the Location: Your outfits should complement the setting. For example, a formal dress might look stunning against the city skyline, while casual attire might be perfect for a session in a park.

Capture Authentic Moments
The best engagement photos are often the ones that capture genuine emotions and interactions. Here’s how to keep it real:
- Be Yourselves: Don’t be afraid to show your true selves. Laugh, joke around, and let your personalities shine through.
- Candid Shots: Some of the most beautiful photos are taken when you’re not posing. Enjoy the moment and let your photographer capture those candid interactions.
- Incorporate Personal Elements: Bring along props or elements that are meaningful to your relationship. Whether it’s a shared hobby, a favorite book, or your pet, these personal touches can add a unique and intimate feel to your photos. A bottle of bubbles will do as well!
Plan for the Weather
Chicago’s weather can be unpredictable, but with a little planning, you can make the most of any situation:
- Check the Forecast: Keep an eye on the weather forecast leading up to your session and communicate with your photographer. Be prepared to be flexible if the weather takes a turn.
- Embrace the Elements: Sometimes, less-than-perfect weather can create stunning photos. A foggy morning, a light drizzle, or even a snowy day can add a unique and romantic touch to your images.
- Backup Plan: Have a backup plan in case of severe weather. Consider indoor locations like a cozy café, a museum, or a beautifully decorated lobby as alternatives.
